Local heroes celebrated on Australia Day

Mayor Bill Spragg this morning presented recipients of Adelaide Hills Council's Citizen of Year awards at Australia Day celebrations in Stirling.

"Australia Day is a great opportunity for us to celebrate people who make valuable and long-lasting contributions to our community," said Mayor Bill Spragg.

Kim Jordan (Lobethal) was presented as the Adelaide Hills Council Citizen of the Year for her long standing community and volunteer work, particularly within in an arts and cultural context.

Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to 24 year old Nicole Weidenhofer from Charleston.

Her nomination applauded her dedication to volunteer work with the CFS and SA Ambulance Service, playing an important role is helping keep her community safe.

The Uraidla and Summertown Country Show won Community Event of the Year, before going on to take out the same category in the State awards.

"We are always delighted that our communities also embrace the celebrations and host a number of events across the region," said Mayor Bill Spragg.

Crowds gathered on the lawns of the Coventry Library as more than 22 new citizens were also officially recognised and welcomed to the community during the celebration.

Celebrations were also hosted by community groups in Mylor, Woodside, Gumeracha and Uraidla where nine Civic Awards were presented to acknowledge outstanding contributions in our communities (see full list below).

"Our people and communities are our most important asset and today's celebrations are just one way we can acknowledge their contributions," added Mayor Bill Spragg.

Adelaide Hills Council Australia Day Ambassador Ms Laura Long said, "I have spent almost one year travelling our great country and I'm honoured to be able to join the Adelaide Hills community to share my gratitude for Australia and for communities like theirs who make it great."
