Climate Change

Climate Change is one of the greatest economic, social and environmental challenges of our time. Expert scientific evidence confirms that human activity is altering the climate. This is changing rainfall patterns, reducing water availability in Australia and increasing the frequency of severe weather events such as bushfires and storms.

Human activities in the past 200 years have resulted in an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The major source of carbon dioxide is from the production of energy by the burning of fossil fuels.

Australia's greenhouse gas emissions are amongst the highest in the world per capita. To help change this trend, Council are implementing policies and programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at a local level.

Green Car

Green Vehicle Guide

By choosing a greener vehicle, you can make a real difference. The Green Vehicle Guide developed by the Australian Government helps you by rating new and older models Australian vehicles based on greenhouse gas and air pollution emissions. The rating is calculated using data provided by manufacturers from testing the vehicle against Australian standards.

Home Energy Toolkit

Home Energy Self Audit Kits

Available on loan from the library these self audit kits are a great way for the whole family to see how much energy is produced from simple household appliances. The kit contains a self audit manual, Power Mate, thermometer and compass. Visit the Council Library Website to arrange a reservation for one of the kits and search for Home Energy Toolkit

Tackling Climate Change in South Australia: What Can You Do?

The Government of South Australia has recognised the importance of tackling climate change and are encouraging households to do their part in reducing their own greenhouse gas emissions. Investing in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power rather than coal or gas, reducing your consumption of power and purchasing Green Power from your electricity retailer are just some of the ways you can do your part for the environment. How we respond, individually and as a community, will determine the fate of our State for generations to come.

Environmental Rebates and Grants

The Australian Government is committed to developing programs and initiatives to support householders, industry and the community to save energy and reduce emissions. There are a number of rebate programs available, including:

  • Green Loans
  • Green Start
  • Home Insulation Safety Plan
  • National Solar Schools
  • Renewable Energy Targets
  • Smart Grid, Smart City
  • Solar Cities
  • Solar Hot Water Rebates

For more information about these programs visit the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.

REES

Residential Energy Efficiency Scheme

The Residential Energy Efficiency Scheme (REES) has been introduced by the State Government to help you to "be energy smart" and lower your energy bills.

Under this scheme electricity and energy providers are now required to meet targets which are about improving energy efficiency in your home. These retailers will be offering you incentives to adopt energy saving measures: things like installing energy more efficient lighting and showerheads.

Solar Panels

Rebates for Installation of Photovoltaic Systems (Solar Electricity, Solar Panels)

Rebates for installation of photovoltaic systems on homes and community use buildings are available from the Australian Government under the Solar Homes and Communities Plan (SHHCP).

This subsidy will be replaced by a solar credits scheme from July 2009.

Please visit the Solar Homes & Communities Plan page for more information or visit the Australian Government's Department for the Environment, Water and Heritage and the Arts website.

  • $50 for water efficient garden goods
  • Up to $30 for a water efficient showerhead
  • $150 for a dual flush toilet
  • $100 for a home water audit from a registered plumber
  • Up to $1000 for rainwater tanks

 Recycle

Recycling of Compact Fluorescent Globes

The Australian Government in its commitment to reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions has implemented measures to phase out incandescent light bulbs by 2010. The compact fluorescent light globe is the cheapest alternative but as they contain mercury they are unable to be disposed of through normal Council operated kerb-side waste collection. Zero Waste SA provides information about convenient locations where you can safely and dispose of these light globes.
