The Kerbside Green Organics service is a significant waste management initiative by the Adelaide Hills Council to encourage and support the composting of household food and garden waste. It was a legislative requirement for Council to provide this service to townships (as defined within the Development Plan) within the metropolitan boundary and Council also decided to extend the service area to include townships outside of the metropolitan boundary and other cluster properties.
Council has recognised that the service will benefit the whole community, by reducing waste to landfill.
The Adelaide Hills Council has provided around 10,000 properties with a new 240L, green lidded, bin for garden and food organics composting. Council acknowledges that there will be some residents who will be disappointed to not receive a green bin. In these instances, the residents should refer to Councils Kerbside Green Organics Service Implementation Policy below and if they fit the criteria, complete the application form and submit for assessment. Residents without kerbside green organics bins can request one free annual garden organics pass. You will also be able to utilise Councils free garden organics drop off days. Call 8408 0400 to request a free annual garden organics pass.

A combination of garden and kitchen waste can be put in your green lidded bin.
The green organics waste is taken to Jefferies, a commercial compost facility. There it is shredded, placed in rows and processed to regulate temperature and moisture before becoming mulch, compost and soil. It is then ready to use for horticulture, public parks and gardens and even for your own backyard.
Your green organics bin will be collected fortnightly on the alternate week to your recycling (yellow) bin. Bins are to be placed at your collection point prior to 6am on day of collection and must be removed within 24hours of collection. Face bins in the right direction - wheels towards the house. Keep a minimum of 50cm clearance around each bin. Be sure organics are not packed too tightly (maximum weight 60kg). Make sure the lid can close - do not overfill your bin. Do not place bags/items on top or around your bin.
See Council's website for domestic waste collection on catastrophic fire days.
Residential properties may apply for an additional bin, each application will be assessed and if approved an additional bin fee will be applied.
Commercial businesses may access the organics for compost service, if they are within the collection service area. However the service will only be supplied upon application and businesses will be required to pay an annual service fee and a once off fee for bin supply. Commercial businesses are not entitled to additional green bins.
