Catastrophic fire day waste collection
WILL MY BLUE, YELLOW OR GREEN DOMESTIC BIN BE COLLECTED ON A CATASTROPHIC FIRE DAY?
Adelaide Hills Council waste contractors, East Waste, have taken the advice from the Country Fire Service and determined that the risk of a fire storm event on a catastrophic fire day can occur without warning and would endanger their drivers. This type of event has happened in South Australia and Victoria before and has resulted in the tragic loss of life and property.
East Waste has a duty to provide a safe workplace for its employees and so on these days, East Waste employees will not collect domestic waste, recyclables or green organics from the kerb in the Adelaide Hills Council area.
If you are a resident and a catastrophic fire warning is issued for any scheduled collection day, then East Waste will not collect your bin on that day. Residents are asked to leave the bin out and East Waste will collect the bin on the first day after the catastrophic rating ends. For example, if your collection day is Tuesday and this is a catastrophic fire day then East Waste will collect your bin on the Wednesday assuming that the Wednesday is not also a catastrophic fire day. If the catastrophic fire rating continued then the Tuesday collection will be made on the first weekday or Saturday after the catastrophic fire rating is lifted. East Waste drivers will not work on Sunday as there are no facilities open to receive the waste.
East Waste will continue to work overtime and Saturdays using all available resources to pick up bins in an order that minimises the time for residents to receive their service, i.e. if there is one catastrophic fire warning on a collection day then all collections will be delayed by one day and normally caught up by the Saturday. If there are two or more consecutive catastrophic fire rating days then the collections will be delayed by the number of fire rating days and East Waste will use all endeavours to catch up the normal collection days as soon as possible but this may take up to two weeks.
If you have any queries then do not hesitate to contact East Waste call centre on (08) 8347 5111. Please remember that if you ring our call centre during catastrophic fire warning periods, patience is required as you are one of 40,000 collections that are being affected.
