History

Very little of the Adelaide story has not been affected in some way by the hills at its back - the Tiers, as the early settlers called them. For the pioneers they were enfuriatingly difficult to scale - especially with a loaded dray or wagon and yet they were the only gateway to practically everywhere.

The Adelaide Hills lent their fertile soils, their cooler climate and higher rainfall; they gave up their stringybark forests and their minerals.

Grudgingly, they provided roads and tracks - to the River Murray, to the south coast, to Melbourne and Sydney. They gave refuge to escaped convicts and runaway sailors. In time the Adelaide Hills were, to a degree, tamed, though there is still many a forested gully so steep and deep that possibly no-one has yet set foot in it - and that within a handful of kilometres of Adelaide.

The exploration and settlement of the Adelaide Hills gathered momentum early in the settlement of South Australia.

The Adelaide Hills Council gratefully acknowledge the assistance and material, supplied by the Royal Automobile Association (RAA).
