New 'Avenue of Honour' Memorial to be officially dedicated in Birdwood

In 1936 the residents of Birdwood were invited to plant an Ash tree along William Street as an "Avenue of Honour" that represented early settler families in the region. Over 100 trees were planted.

The trees grew for 77 years before they needed to be removed for safety purposes. When the wood of these trees was found to be unsuitable for the creation of a memorial, an alternative was designed.

Will Sexton, a life-long local and owner of Stag Fox Forge, was commissioned to create a unique community bench that would stand on William Street as an acknowledgement of this history. The final product combines steel, copper and timber.
