Council aims for greater accessibility in 2021

​Recently, Council worked with Scope Australia to create an Easy English version of our Access & Inclusion Plan 2020-24. The Easy English version was created with and for people with low literacy, intellectual disability and those from CALD (Culturally And Linguistically Diverse) backgrounds.

Community and Social Planning Officer Josh Spier says the key priority for the Access and Inclusion Plan (AIP) is to provide accessible and available information.

"Incorporating Easy English (also known as Easy Read) in this report will allow people with low English literacy to access information like never before," Josh said.

"In order to make this document as accessible as possible, Scope's team used consumer testers with lived experience of low literacy to review and approve the final report."

To further improve accessibility, Council is providing training for staff who produce flyers, newsletter and posters for the community. Staff members involved are currently undertaking Document Accessible Training with the Centre of Inclusive Design.

Josh is confident that this training will give staff the knowledge and skills to provide accessible information to the community.

"We are planning to incorporate Easy English in all future documents, website, social media posts and advertising thanks to this training," Josh said.
