Santos Tour Down Under 2021 update

Events South Australia has confirmed that the Santos Tour Down Under will not go ahead in January 2021 due to the complexities and risks involved with international teams travelling into the state.

A smaller, domestic cycling festival will be held in the streets of Adelaide and regional South Australia.

“We appreciate the tremendous amount of work undertaken by the Santos Tour Down Under team in trying to plan a safe 2021 event and though we are disappointed, we fully support their decision not to hold the event in January" said Deputy Mayor Nathan Daniell.

"Council staff have worked with the Santos Tour Down Under team on aspects of their scenario planning and can attest the process has been incredibly thorough. Although an international event is off the table, we look forward working with them on a new, reimagined domestic event.”

"The Santos Tour Down Under is much loved in the Adelaide Hills with our residents, towns and community groups embracing the many opportunities it brings. There are so many ways to get involved, from cheering on the riders and decorating the roadside to fundraising and hosting associated events.

"Over 29,000 people attended the Women's TDU events in the Hills this year and over 191,000 attended the two Men's stages. Hills businesses benefit from these visitors, many of whom are from interstate or overseas and spend a significant amount of time in the Hills. The race garners a huge audience around the globe on broadcast channels and social media, providing an exceptional chance to showcase the beauty of our landscape and the many local businesses doing great things."

"It's important for the community and the economy that, where safe to do so, events are adapted to meet Covid-19 regulations instead of having no event at all so we're pleased SATC will still proceed with a domestic event. Being part of a unique and exciting domestic event would enable our community to support some of Australia's best riders along with showcasing our region to intrastate and interstate visitors. The South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC) will share their plans for a new domestic festival of cycling later this month."

"Adelaide Hills Council is a long-time supporter of the Santos Tour Down Under and we look forward to working with SATC towards the 2022 event."
