Farewell, Soy Sauce Fish!

From 1 September 2025, South Australia will officially say goodbye to the little soy sauce fish.

news plastic soy sauce fish ban

Farewell, Soy Sauce Fish!

While they may have been a cute sidekick to your sushi, these plastic packets are banned from September 1 as part of the state’s next step in reducing single-use plastics. Along with the fishies, the following items are also banned:

  • Straws and cutlery attached to food and drink packs such as fruit boxes and noodle bowls

  • Pre-packaged EPS containers (like noodle cups)

Why the change? Even though soy sauce fish are made from recyclable plastic, their fiddly size makes them almost impossible to recycle. Too often, they end up in landfill, as street litter or floating around where they don’t belong in our waterways.

It’s all part of a bigger push to protect our environment.

So next time you grab sushi, don’t be surprised if your soy sauce comes in a different outfit. The fish are swimming off into history!
