Some areas within the Adelaide Hills Council are currently affected by fruit fly restrictions under PIRSA’s (Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA) yellow suspension zone.

If you live in an affected area (see map below), there are important rules to follow when disposing of fruit and vegetable waste.

Don’t compost restricted fruit and vegetables

What you can’t compost:

Restricted items include:

  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Citrus
  • Stonefruit
  • Berries
  • Avocados
  • Capsicum

What to do instead:

  • If you have a green bin: Place all restricted fruit and vegetable waste in the green bin.
  • If you don’t have a green bin: Seal the waste in two plastic bags and place it in your blue (general waste) bin.

Following these rules is essential to protect local gardens, orchards and food production from fruit fly.
