How good are libraries? Too good to lose
How good are libraries?
Public libraries across South Australia make a powerful difference in our communities every day, and the numbers speak:
- More than 1 in 4 South Australians are library members
- 487,000+ active SA members
- 64,000+ programs delivered each year
- 11.5 million loans accessed from more than 140 public libraries
- $253 million in community benefit generated across SA
Libraries are much more than places to borrow books. They are welcoming, safe and trusted community spaces where people of all ages can learn, connect and access essential services.
Your local library is at risk
There are more than 140 public libraries across South Australia. Local councils invest $86 million each year to keep these important community spaces open and thriving.
However, under the current State Government funding agreement, public libraries are set to lose $11.5 million over five years.
This funding shortfall could result in:
- Fewer new books and resources
- Reduced programs and events
- Shorter opening hours
- Fewer staff available to help community members
Without increased state support, the services our communities rely on are at risk.
Councils are calling for urgent action
Local councils across South Australia are calling on the State Government to increase funding to ensure libraries can continue to:
- Support literacy and lifelong learning
- Provide digital access and inclusion
- Strengthen community connection
- Offer safe and welcoming public spaces
Libraries are essential community infrastructure, and they deserve sustainable funding.
