Resignation of Councillor Melanie Selwood
At its meeting on Tuesday, 27 May, the Adelaide Hills Council formally acknowledged the resignation of Cr Melanie Selwood, who has stepped down as Councillor for the Valleys Ward.
Cr Selwood, first elected in 2022 and appointed Deputy Mayor in May 2024, has made the decision to resign after being preselected by the Greens to lead their Upper House ticket for the upcoming state election in March.
In addressing the Council, Cr Selwood explained, “Late last year I was preselected as the lead candidate for the Greens at the March state election. If successfully elected to state parliament, I will have to resign from Council at that time. A resignation from Council in March would result in my seat remaining vacant until the next general council elections in November 2026.”
With the resignation of Cr Pauline Gill already triggering a supplementary election in the Valleys Ward, Cr Selwood noted that this presented an opportunity for residents to elect two new Councillors.
“Those Councillors will be able to put all of their focus into serving the community until the next general election. I believe that having a full contingent of councillors is the best outcome for the residents of the Adelaide Hills.”
"I also want to extend a huge thank you to the staff, whose dedication to the Adelaide Hills is demonstrated in every conversation I have with them.”
The Council will now conduct a supplementary election to fill the two vacancies in Valleys Ward and one vacancy in Ranges Ward, in accordance with local government regulations. Details about the election process and timeline will be shared with residents once confirmed by the South Australian Electoral Commission.
The Adelaide Hills Council extends its gratitude to Cr Selwood for her dedicated service and significant contributions to the community.
