Social media changes for people under 16

The Australian Government is introducing a new law that will restrict social media account access for those under 16 years. From 10 December 2025, you need to be 16 or over to have a social media account. It’s part of a new law to keep under 16s safer online.

It is important for everyone in Australia, especially for parents and carers of young people under 16, to understand what the changes are, when they start, who they impact and why they are needed, so that you can best support your family and others through this change

From 10 December age-restricted platforms will include, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X, YouTube, Kick, Reddit, and Twitch. This list is not a static “list” and will continue to change.
