Amy Gillet Bikeway Extension Opening 2025

Stage 4 of the Amy Gillett Bikeway officially opens

The newest section of the Amy Gillett Bikeway has officially opened, extending the popular cycling and walking trail from Mount Torrens to Birdwood.

Over 100 walkers and riders of all ages, and even some fury friends converged on the Amy Gillett Bikeway to be the first to explore the newest addition!

Stage 4 adds another link to this much-loved route, providing a safe and scenic path for locals and visitors to explore. The extension winds through picturesque farmland and native bushland, offering another opportunity for the community to enjoy the Adelaide Hills by bike or on foot.

The project was made possible through Federal and State Government funding support of $2.6 million each, an Adelaide Hills Council contribution of $500,000, alongside the dedication of Council staff and contractors.

The Malinauskas Labor Government has made it a priority to get people off their screens and this bikeway will encourage more people to be active in the local community.

The State Government is proud to support projects that make cycling more accessible and connect our towns and communities. Projects like this not only provide safer spaces for cyclists and families but also help drive local tourism and strengthen regional economies.

— Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Emily Bourke

Acting Mayor, Nathan Daniell stated:

After many years of Council and community advocacy, I’m delighted that we have delivered Stage 4 of the Amy Gillett Bikeway.

This extension enhances an already much-loved community asset and provides a safe space for both residents and tourists to actively explore our beautiful Hills countryside.

This is undoubtedly my favourite part of the bikeway, winding almost entirely through rural farming, grape growing and natural bushland.

— Acting Mayor, Nathan Daniell

Adelaide Hills Council and partners also have a greater vision to create A Great Australian Wine Trail which would encompass the Amy Gillett Bikeway and connect the McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Barossa and Clare wine regions.

The Bikeway commemorates the life of professional South Australian cyclist Amy Gillett who tragically lost her life on a training ride in Germany in 2005.
