The Charleston Cow and Calf Sculpture is a striking pair of full-scale Corten steel artworks that celebrate the character and spirit of Charleston.

  • Location: Charleston Playground
  • Address: 38 Onkaparinga Valley Rd, Charleston SA 5244
  • Commissioned by: Charleston Community Group

Made possible through the remarkable $100,000 gift from the late Bill Fechner, the donation supported the construction of a community gym, garden, and these sculptures that now stand proudly at the Charleston Playground.

Created by artist James Hamilton of J Hamilton Design, the works took more than 800 hours of detailed steel craftsmanship. Their lifelike presence has quickly become a much-loved local landmark, admired by visitors of all ages.

The sculptures were officially unveiled on Sunday 11 December 2022, where the community came together to celebrate and name the cows: Bessie (the mother) and Charlie (the calf).

Donated by the late Bill Fechner, and developed in consultation with the Charleston Community Group, these sculptures are a lasting tribute to community generosity and artistic vision.
