The Longwood Institute is located on the traditional lands of the Kaurna people and the Peramangk people also have a significant relationship with this area.

The Longwood Institute was built to provide a much-needed local community meeting place. The foundation stone was laid in January 1903 on land donated by William Nicholls and completed by June. The freestone building was built by J. Mullins of Aldgate Valley for £280, raised by public subscriptions.

The hall was opened as an affiliated public library Institute by Stirling resident Lady Mary Symon. In the 1950s, the Institute was closed, ownership transferred to the local Council with management as a community hall by the Longwood Bradbury Progress Association.

Over the years the Longwood Institute has supported various activities including music and dancing, indoor sport and recreation, agricultural shows and markets, educational sessions and community meetings, commemorations and celebrations.

The building has undergone many renovations and survived local disasters such as an earthquake in 1954 and serious fires in 1905, 1912, 1980, and 2020. It remains an important community resource of local heritage significance.
