Join master weaver Janette Murrungun, who is from the remote community of Numbulwar in South East Arnhem Land, for a hands-on weaving circle workshop held at Fabrik in conjunction with her exhibition of woven yir (string bags).
Janette invites you to, "Learn traditional techniques passed down through generations and about Maguj (pandanus) and Nanja (repurposed ghost nets) collected from our shores. As you weave, you will be part of a living practice connecting people, place, and purpose. Sit with us, share stories, and take part in keeping these traditions strong".

During this workshop you will be introduced to the traditional technique of coil weaving, giving you the opportunity to complete the base of a small basket and the materials to complete the basket at home.

About Janette Murrungun

Janette is an arts worker at Numbulwar Numburindi Arts and an experienced weaver who uses ghost nets and pandanus. An expert harvester, Janette holds deep knowledge around sourcing plants for string-making, natural dyeing and traditional weaving.

What you need to know

  • Workshop fee includes all materials.

  • We supply everything you need to create your small basket.

  • Suitable for beginners 10 years and older

    • Participants 15 years and under must be accompanied by an adult.

    • Participants 15-17 years attending alone must have written permission to attend by an adult.

    • No previous weaving skills required.

  • If your circumstances change and you can no longer attend this workshop, please email niki.vouis@ahc.sa.gov.au before 5pm, Thursday 20 November 2025. We cannot issue refunds after this time and date.

  • Tea and coffee provided.

This workshop is held in conjunction with Janette's exhibition Yirr, Taking place at Fabrik from 28 November 2025 until 1 March 2026 as part of Tananthi Festival. Find out more here.
