Asbestos-contaminated coloured sand: Disposal at Heathfield and Brinkley Resource Recovery Centres

Residents may be aware of the national recall of coloured play sand products found to contain trace amounts of asbestos.

While the risk of airborne exposure is assessed as low, the sand must still be handled and disposed of in the same way as other asbestos-containing materials.

What will be offered

To support our community during the recall, the Adelaide Hills Region Waste Management Authority (AHRWMA) will accept recalled coloured sand at both of its facilities:

At both sites, staff will:

  • Provide heavy-duty plastic bags for secure double-bagging and sealing of the sand and any used PPE or cleaning cloths.
  • Accept small quantities from residents at no charge.
  • Accept commercial quantities (e.g. retailers) at the standard asbestos disposal rate.
