South Australian public libraries are more than places to borrow books, they’re vital community hubs supporting education, wellbeing, digital access, emergency response, and economic growth.

• More than one in four South Australians are library members – that’s over 400,000 people who turn to their local library not just for resources, but for connection, support, lifelong learning, and a safe space to belong.
• With more than 140 public libraries across the state, South Australians make over 9.7 million visits each year – that’s more than the total national attendance at AFL games last season.
• A quarter of these visitors use library internet or Wi-Fi services, equating to more than 2 million digital connections each year – a vital lifeline for many in our community.
• Libraries are powered by over 900 committed staff and supported by countless volunteers who help deliver more than 64,000 training programs annually.
• While 84% of public library funding comes from local councils, these services benefit everyone. Ongoing State Government funding is essential to support literacy programs, digital inclusion, and outreach to vulnerable groups.
• Our public libraries contribute an estimated $253 million in economic and social value each year. For every dollar invested, nearly $3 is returned to the community.
• And with 95% of users viewing libraries as trusted public spaces, it’s clear they remain one of our most valued community assets.
