Information and Briefing Sessions

Information and briefing sessions are held by the CEO or senior staff to help Council and committee members better understand key issues and make informed decisions.

Information Briefing Session Meeting

Information and briefing sessions are an opportunity for Council Members to learn more about matters coming before Council and to ask questions for clarification.

They are not a substitute for open discussion or formal decision-making at Council or Committee meetings. Open and transparent meetings are essential to representative democracy and help maintain public confidence in Council’s decision-making processes.

How sessions are conducted

Information and briefing sessions are organised by, or on behalf of, the Council or CEO for Council or committee members. They focus on topics that are, or may soon be, part of a formal Council or Committee meeting agenda.

Sessions are chaired by the CEO or a senior staff member. Formal minutes are not recorded. All sessions are conducted in accordance with Council’s Information or Briefing Session Policy.

Unless a confidential item is being discussed, information and briefing sessions are open to the public. Members of the public are welcome to observe but will generally not be invited to speak or take part in discussions.
