Meet Adam Newton our first dedicated Fire Prevention Officer

Get to know Adam

What brought you to the Adelaide Hills Council and this role? I’ve always had a strong interest in fire prevention, and this role gives me the chance to work in an area I’m passionate about while helping the community.

Can you share a bit about your background or experience in fire prevention? I have worked in local government for 10 years and have been a CFS volunteer for 12 years as a lieutenant.

What are you enjoying most about working in the Adelaide Hills Council? Being part of a fantastic team in a picturesque environment.

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you? People might be surprised to learn that I am a huge Taylor Swift fan.

About the role

What does your role in fire prevention involve on a day-to-day basis? Assessing properties, identifying fire risks and issuing burning permits inside and outside of fire danger season.

What are the biggest challenges in fire prevention in the Hills? The topography of the land. Steep slopes, gullies, and uneven terrain make it difficult for landowners and machinery to access high-risk areas to remove vegetation. Removing vegetation and creating firebreaks is harder compared to flat land.

How do you work with the community to help reduce fire risk? I work with the community to reduce fuel loads around their homes and property and educate residents on risks, helping them prepare and stay safer during fire season.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job so far? Being out in the community and helping people better understand the risks around fire.

Tips & advice

What’s one simple thing residents can do right now to make their property safer? Tidy up their property prior to fire danger season by removing the fuel load and clearing gutters regularly.

What resources or services does Council provide that people may not know about? Adelaide Hills Council offers free green waste drop off days throughout the year.

How can residents get in touch if they have questions about fire safety? They can visit the Adelaide Hill Council website, CFS website or contact our customer service team.

Personal touch

Do you have a favourite spot in the Adelaide Hills to relax or recharge? I enjoy exploring the many local coffee shops around the hills. Each has its own charm, and it’s a great way to relax while supporting local businesses.

Coffee or tea – what gets you through the day? Coffee.

If you could describe your new role in three words, what would they be? Serving the community.
